HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Hey Im a new convert too. I, however, have little to know faith in my own ability to do this and have been talking with Eric (Admin). He is very responsive and I plan on taking my car to him once I am ready to swap. Sorry for the hijack. Good luck with your swap

Hmm, I don't think I've seen that done before. I'm excited to see some pics and maybe an artist concept drawing. Good luck with the swap.

parts

Post by kevin924kevin on Mon Feb 28, 2011 4:05 pm

Hello all, i am back.Picked up my final brake parts. Installed the new hats on the front rotors. They look great. The MO30 rear rotors are very nice also. I have completed the crossmember mods. (steel) The hoop for the new front end is complete. Just finished the templates for the front frame area. Going to start the paint stripping of the engine bay. Once complete i can tack in the plates. The balance of the drive line is being rebuit as we speak ( less motor brand new) trailing arms torque tube etc.I have tried to post photos, but not sure what i am doing wrong. I will figure it out.

mods

Post by kevin924kevin on Mon Feb 28, 2011 10:15 pm

What am i doing, well my car is a 1978 924. My cross member is steel and is a completeley different mount than the aluminum ones. The diff is the steel has welded in place shim blocks on the frame to set the hieght of the crossmember. The aluminum is dropped by the design change in the crossmember. My motor hung off mounts on the fire wall on both sides, and attached to the frame. So i cut out the mounts and made plates in that area.Looks factory. My crossmember was plated on all sides, a square tube insurted in the under side. Then the motor mount holes had to be located and drilled. It turned out very well. My car is a bit of early stuff a late stuff. As i said the car is a 78. I have changed out the entire running gear to the S2 which allowed the big brake upgrade, and suspension choices.(cost was very cheap to do) I am using new steel arms from from a pre 86 ( came with race bushings) so my front suspension geometrey does not change. My cross member is a 1/2 wider at the a arm location than the alum.Everything else is S2. Front brakes are 993tt calipers and rotors and hats & adapters from Lindsey. ( they look great)The rears are the S2 baby brembos and MO30 rotors. According to what i read this is a good system. I am not sure yet which shock combo i will run, but leaning towards the bilstein escourt cup line.Fully ajustible.
Motor will be the LS3 480hp (great for every day driving, just add gas). The motor comes complete, plug and play. The body as mentioned before is under going as much work and changes as the rest of the car.I purchased the complete front fenders alum hood and rockers and rear quarters from an 08 997tt(they are like brand new la porsche). I went with the 997GT3 nose and rear bumper I have all the matching lights etc. I found a rear hatch with the 968 wing so that is being shipped on thursday. Just mirrors left, They will be the 968 or the 993. Sorry dont mean to be long winded but alot of changes.in all its down to the nitty gritty for parts. Motor will be shipped when the car is ready for install( dont want to waist any warranty). The car will be built complete to running, then stripped for final paint. I have a guy that will stretch the front fenders and work the quarters on to the car. I am antisipating have to move the rear hatch forward a bit to keep the 997 line for the tail light slope. I have the front end mocked up it looks real nice. My hole intention was to build the 924, I got alittle carried away. But the end finish is going to be worth the time. I will have to put a little bump in my hood, maybe i will see. The one thing that i am am very happy about is this will be a all metal body less front and rear noses. This is very important to me, i want the car to look as if it came that way from day one.So lots of time an effort from ahost of people over the course of this build. I am doing the complete design and mechanical aspects. Mock up of the body and then the boys take over. I will keep tring to post some photos( starting to build a file.) If any one has any advise, much appreciated.

Wowsers!

Ive seen a 944 with boxster/996 side view mirrors on it. Looked pretty good. They seem to be cheap too.

Pictures Now! Laughing

rear suspension

Post by kevin924kevin on Mon Mar 14, 2011 3:36 pm

Well finished the removel of the 924 rear suspension. Time to clean the under side and get it ready for the S2 suspension. All new bushings in the rear to match the front. Question, has anybody done the bearings in the torque tube. Anybody have any fail?

Re: New convert under way

My Torque tube bearing is a bit noisy. One job in the future is to either overhaul it with new bearings or find and install a rebuilt one. My donor car only had 77k miles, so I'm surprised its making noise at such low mileage. There is a lot of information on Rennlist regarding the overhaul process.

It looks as though the rear suspension and transaxle need to be removed in order to lower the torque tube out of the chassis - so it's better to deal with it before you assemble everything.

Dan.

torque tube

Post by kevin924kevin on Tue Mar 15, 2011 12:39 pm

Thanks Dan , i agree, replace now and save a bunch of hassel later.Anybody changed bearings, what is a cost to account for ( i am in canada). My S2 tube has about 41k on it, and i noticed compared to my 924 tube ( 110k ), that the bearings made a bit of noise. From what i see you need a special puller for the middle bearing? Advise anybody.

Torque tube

Post by fliermike45 on Tue Mar 15, 2011 2:28 pm

FYI.....Constantine is located in Vero Beach, FL where I live.
He has developed a great set of replacement bearings and can overhaul your tube if you wish.
He overhauled mine and it came back looking like new.

Usual disclaimers......pm me and I will give you his email address.

I used the "widebody" unit as the turbo nose will not fit a NA car.

That's why it looks familiar, Skywalker did the widebody kit fom them, I didn't recognize the nose without paint, and his foglights!
