For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Okay, so a little back ground as this is my first post;

I'm a young military guy, stationed in Japan whom has recently purchased a 88' 944 NA, 125k miles, cherry otherwise. I'm going to be returning to the states again soon, and I already know I want to do a swap.

I have a year left overseas, and I'm wondering if things (parts) that might be harder to get in the US/UK, might be easier/cheaper to get while I'm still here.

Aside from that, I'm looking for the easiest way to add at least another 150hp, and a substancial amount of torque to my 944 without breaking the bank.

Currently my state of residence is FL, so I don't think there are any emissions laws to worry about.

Hypothetically, with my car in hand, limited wrenching experiance and about $5k, what would be the fastest/easist swap and what would be the turnaround on HP/Torque?
I'm not above going to a mechanic for the hard stuff, but I'd rather do this myself.

Lately I've been interested in salvaged C5 LS1's, but I'm limited in knowledge of my options?
I plan on driving my car pretty regularly but no more than 30-40 miles a day, road trips are out of the question. So gas milage isn't really a large concern but 12-15 GPM is a bit harsh.

Welcome to the forum.
If you search you can find where many others have asked the same questions on their first project post. Lots of good information.

for doing this project i recommend having a defined scope of work for yourself and budget. Now double the budget. Creeping elegance and the unknown oops will occur. The scope helps to define what you want to build and how. You can ask many questions on trade offs and you can prioritize your plan. You can also work in phases.

Engine: sure the LS1 is nice but with the Truck engine swaps, you bring in more options and cost differentials. 4.8, 5.3 as compared to the LS1. I prefer low mileage but others have gone with higher.

Kit, define what you have to buy and then are you good enough or have access to someone who can fabricate parts for you. I use Texas Performance for my kits. (Admin).

Determine needs.
Engine - Engine plus accessories and brackets to f-body
AC - hmm Florida - yes
Brake - manual or Power - I prefer power Hydroboost, others like manual
Headers - kind of a requirement
exhaust - use stock or build new
engine cooling - stock radiator or new
.....

I can tell you, driving with a V8 is off the fun factor scale and building one is a blast too.

Haha, thanks Vorsche.

Well let’s see, after your reply i decided to scour all threads in the LS1 forum.
Lots of good answers but too many blank spots. I ordered the Swap manual, should be here in a bit.

What I'm really for as a end result is a Commuter with plenty of street performance.
I can only budget $7k to this, and I want to do it in stages. By 'stages' I mean I want to do the work over 6 months time, but be able to drive while working on the small stuff during the week and to do the bigger "all day" things on the weekend.

While maintaining that scope of work I want the simplest (and this is really the key word) type of swap/upgrade. There are a few 944 N/A's and a Turbo around where I live, I could get for about $1.5-$4k for donor cars if it comes to that.
The 5.3 sounds interesting, but I don’t see much support for that swap. Any suggestions?
I only really want 300-350HP, so a LS1 was the first thing I went for since I saw the level of support and availability of parts. Oh, and the over abundance of horsepower and torque.
I know most people on here would just suggest getting a 951 and doing the performance mods (it seems). But I’ve already committed to the car ($6k).
Now I don’t have a garage, and I don’t have any wrenching experience, but my family is pretty handy with the normal stuff. My experience is limited to oil and tire changes…

Now kits… I don’t really have anyone I can have fabricate stuff, but I’m not above trying to learn. I just don’t own the equipment or space. Speaking of which, I would be doing most of the work out at the base in their AutoPort. So tools won’t be the real problem, just can’t take ‘em home or risk breaking anything. So this means anything I can scavenge or buy the cheapest would be my main means of acquiring.

I know I will probably want a Turbo or TurboS transaxle from what I've been reading. Not that I'm going to be drag racing, it just seems that they're stronger and I won't have to worry down the road should I go for more power. But at the same time, if I go low enough in BHP/WHP depending on the engine, I think the N/A trans will keep. What do you think?

I do want AC. I do want to keep my power steering, but I don't know if it's even an option.
Brakes: if I can upgrade without much trouble I want to, but I won't REALLY be racing, just a little aggressive driving.

Headers- I have no outright preference, suggestions? I want the best thing my little bit of money can buy. (Obviously)

Electric- I'm dreading this. I'm colourblind, so I've never really messed with them. I would defiantly outsource to a technician if it's cheapish- as long as it's done right. If not, I want something simple that I can be helped with.
I think
The important thing for me is to maintain the handling while upping the HP/Torque.

Dont worry about this. It may seem horrific just looking at it but, all wires in a harness go to a specific pin of a connector, all of which are numbered on the connector. What's more, each conector has a specific shape and number of pins that allows it only to be connected to a specific device. For example, if you needed to modify a harness and get rid of a wire, we would say "remove the wire at pin 13 of the X2 connector at the ECM."
Regardless, the forum will be here to help you through this part.

Dailey Driver 944 V8? [Rookie] Empty Are you really sure???

Post  fliermike45 Sat Nov 05, 2011 5:17 pm

Would like to give you some advice here before you spend any money.

This is a MAJOR project and cannot be completed on the basis of drive it while working on it.

In addition you need some basic workshop equipment like an engine crane, four axle stands and possibly a transmission jack or a floor jack that can be modified to lift a transmission. To do all this work you need a dedicated space, from my experience it's not realistic to keep jacking up the car to work on it and then letting it down to move it.

The front crossmember has to come of the car to be modified to clear the oil pan, which means the front suspension is disturbed. While this happens you really need to consider lowered springs and new uprated front shock absorbers. Now extra engine power means you need beefier brakes, while the front suspension is disturbed, then do the brake upgrade and fix the lower A arm ball joints.

Firewall needs to be strengthened, the brake master cylinder has to be addressed because you loose the vacuum boost servo. Stock radiator is marginal. Depending on condition, the torque tube bearings could be shot. Fuel system has to be plumbed.

I would look seriously at your budget and then double it. I have converted three cars, a V8 MGB, a V6 MGB GT and a LS1 944, each has cost nearly double the original estimate. You will be surprised at the nickel and dime money you spend on the last 10% of the conversion.

Hate to appear negative, but if you have purchased Sloan's book, read it carefully, you need to do everything he suggests, the book does not address every detail and there are some omissions.

The Headers sloan suggests are lousy, good coated headers cost me nearly $1000.00.....ouch!

Wishing you good luck with your project.

I will agree with everything that is said here. Its a big project and not something that can be done while your driving it. From what I've learned all of these cars were built a little differently, so there is no way of knowing that one thing will work for every car. You will spend plenty of time taking the engine (V8) in and out of the car. I think I'm up to 6 times of putting this engine in my car for test fits (getting good at it now though) and I'm not done yet! I could have done it with less but I've moved while working on this project and had some other problems too. If you do start this make sure your willing to put plenty of time and money into it. This isn't the project your going to want to do if you can only spend so much money or if your in a bind for a car, this is a project for someone who loves cars and loves (and I mean really loves) working on them. Just something to think about.

PS: I spent $800 on my headers and they're not even finished! One of the many things to think about.

Dailey Driver 944 V8? [Rookie] Empty Re: Dailey Driver 944 V8? [Rookie]

Post  MartinGTR Sat Nov 05, 2011 10:28 pm

Alright, See this is the input I was wanting, albiet a little bit focused on the lesser of my requirements.
I have my beater so not driving the 944 won't be an issue. So putting it up for a while won't be the problem, I just wanted to make it quick as possible. OK, so let's say I just use the garage out at the base, they have everything; including machine shop (I have no experience, again).
Lifts, hoists, tools, almost anything I'll probably need.

What I guess I'm looking for is guidance in all of this; a step-by-step walkthrough.
Is that what Sloans manual is? I couldn't really tell by the vague stuff I've seen copied from it.
I was checking out the truck engines, and they really seem the better deal since I'm not wanting to build a monster. I just want to get this car up to my specs. 300hp is nice enough.

Okay So my budget is 3.5k - doubled to 7k. That's for all the big stuff. I can easily save another 7k next year for all my odds and ends. So 3.5k budget per year for 2 years, doubled, 14k.
Which I think is more than I WANT to put in to it, but it's what I CAN afford.

With all of that said, the shopping list- I dont see very many "suggestions" just on that one part of the book. Is there an options list or some kind of flow chart or compatability chart that lets me see what the big (basic) options are?

Like;
"300hp>increase suspension>bigger breaks.
Bigger breaks>NO AC. (or what ever, I dont know this stuff)

250hp>increase suspension>AC available."

So this brings me to another option; Keeping the 944 a Porsche. 968 engine? What other options are there for Porsche to Porshe swaps? Like I said I'm committed to this 944 N/A, so buying a Turbo or "S" is out unless it's a donor car.

Or something
