HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Another broken axle-help
Ok, this is the third one I've broken. Always outboard passanger side. The first two were stock axles. The last one I had built special with the biggest balls and cages as possible. 10 mph roll in first and bury the throttle. No clutch drops or shock loading. Pretty sticky tires but street tires none the less. 265/30-18 Goodyear F1's.
I have installed xchop's trans mount. It went in fine. No alignment issues. Is there something else I need to be looking at? Oh, I'm making a little under 400hp at the tires. Anybody got a line on better axles or cv's? Thanks. No time to work on it anytime soon but I'm gathering ideas. I'd like to fix it once and for all. It's a turbo box with n.a. fifth gear. Turbo brakes and hubs. Torsen differential.

Re: Another broken axle-help
Do some checking , but I think the 930 CV's will bolt in with some minor mods. They are super strong.
Re: Another broken axle-help
930 axles are the ones to mod. The 930 CV's have 28 spline shafts, 94mm PCD ..as compared to the smaller diameter axles, 33 spline, 86mm PCD 944 CV's.
The 930 CV's are also wider in the cages by 6mm than the 944 CV's and have a bigger set of ballz.....

I'm pretty sure that's how my last set was built. I'll pull one out tonight and get it down to the cv shop in town. Unfortunately I'm on the road for the next 4 weekends. I went to put the trans mount in Saturday and it poured rain! Go figure.

Re: Another broken axle-help
So you busted a CV or an axle? And are you saying you have the larger Diameter 930 Axles?
There is an adapter puck drawing somewhere that can mount the 930 CV's on the 944 axle flanges. I'm not suer if the 930 axles come in different lengths to be able to simply install in the 944 without lengthening or shortening, but what is good news is the 930 CV's also have a larger articulation degree than the 944 CV's so thicker adapter pucks can be made to swap over if 930 axle/cv combos are shorter than 944 axles.

Re: Another broken axle-help
I'm breaking the cv's. Not the shaft itself. It just breaks the cage to bits. The guy that built them fit the biggest cage and balls he could for that flange bolt pattern and diameter. It seems the bolt pattern is the determining factor for the size of the cage and balls. Make sense. I could see using an adapter to allow a larger diameter bolt pattern, cage and balls.
I see a pattern though. First I was breaking bolts and I went to ARP's. Now i'm breaking cv joints. If I fix this, will I be looking at transmissions? I figured my street tires would be a good "fusible link". I guess they have more grip then I had anticipated.

Re: Another broken axle-help
He didn't use 930 CV's if he used the factory 944 flanges.... as the PCD's are different.
Which CV busted this time (pass/driver) or the other times for that matter?
I will share my 930 CV adapter drawing as I am rethinking the transaxle upgrade.
I also am assuming the Early offset cars like mine have shorter axles than the later cars and are technically stronger, but more difficult to find off the shelf 930 axles to convert. I'm searching.

Every time it has been passenger side outter. Makes me wonder if there is something else going on. 88 car.88 turbo gearbox. Turbo hubs and turbo rear breaks.

very strange as it usually is the drivers side inner CV.
By the way what is the OD of the axle shaft for the later cars?

Hey, if all else fails, just do like I did and install a Camaro rear end in it!
Re: Another broken axle-help
Hey Admin, you need a Ford nine inch in there! Talk about bullet proof!
Did you have to shorten it?

Re: Another broken axle-help
Hey SB, ask your axle builder what CV's he used. I'm curious if he used the VW Bus CV's as they are str0nger with larger balls and cages, but have less degrees of articulation. I wonder if the couple degrees difference would actually matter?

Re: Another broken axle-help
Do you have 33 or 25 spline axles?
The S2 and later 944 turbos had 25 spline shafts (86mm PCD). I’m pretty sure the axle diameter didn’t change so I’m guessing the CV joint itself was improved.

Just got back into town. I need to pull the broken axle out tonight and see what is what. I've logged a lot of road time this year. My projects are being neglected!!

Re: Another broken axle-help
I would check to see what your CV alignment looks like, too. The further from a straight line the axle gets, the more stress you put on everything!

Has anybody mic'd the 944 Turbo CV's balls and cages? And axle diameters?
So far the best bolt-on solution (upgrade) is the VW BUS Type II CV's with 20mm Balls and bigger cages. It would work since 948 posted the 944's axle articulation.

About half way into my own investigation on the various CV dimensions a few years back I found this site....Enjoy

The only possible snag I see with the Type 2 CV's is a slightly decreased amount "plunge" over the stock units. Tis could be checked by moving the suspension through its full range....

Re: Another broken axle-help
I have the dims to convert our flanges to 930 CV's but I've seen that site and Type II's would be an upgrade to the Early 944 CV's. I still am curious what the cage and ball dimensions are on the 87-up 944 Turbo 25 spline CV's. I'm begining to think that Porsche stole BMW's CV's off the shelf as they are 25 spline

Re: Another broken axle-help
I have managed to get tomorrow off. I'll pull the axle and see what is what. I can put a caliper on the cv balls and check diameter and get a spline count. What else should I be looking for? I'm pretty sure the local shop here in Daytona Beach built them with the type 2 ball and cage. You'll never break these, he said!

Re: Another broken axle-help
Check the Ball Dia. and cage width. also check the CV outer housing width. If there is pitting/galling in the races on the driver's side, then alot of side to side movement under torque is the culprit a.k.a. factory rubber mount letting the tranny shift back and forth over a long period of time. Their statement would be true if the transaxle remains stationary throughout the life of the CV!
