HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Bell housings bolt pattern
Need some help as I am lost with this one. Do all the LS series engines have the same bolt hole pattern to fit GM auto trans and manual bell housings? Are the truck engines 5.3L the same BH bolt pattern as the LS-1? Is the 5.3L an LS engine or just a Vortec? I was told it was considered to be a LS-4.
I am getting a lot of side bar conflicts from local people and I can't get a very common answer.
Would the book titled "How to Swap Chevy LS1 LS3 LS6 LS7 Engine into anything" be of any help in finding suggestions to differences in the accessory mounts from the truck engines versus the car engines?

Re: Bell housings bolt pattern
The aluminum block 5.3 (LS4) BH is completely different than the iron block 5.3 truck motors that are the same BH pattern as the other LS engines..... No one to my knowledge has made an adapter plate for it yet to mate to the 944 torque tube....

Sorry I forgot to give all information. The 5.3L engine is cast iron with the aluminum heads.

4.8,5.3,6.0 and now 6.2L truck engines have the SAME BH pattern as the LS engines. The LS4 engine is the only exception with the GM 60 degree pattern. I have a iron-block 5.3L (LM7) truck engine swapped in my 948 with a Camaro pressure plate and C5 Corvette 2-piece bellhousing. Well over 2000 miles on the swap so far.

That sounds GREAT!!! Since my engine was backed by a auto trans I didn't get a clutch flywheel set up. What is the flywheel that I would need to look for or does it matter as long as it is for a LS series?
We missed picking up the starter and need one as well.
My intentions is to place this in a 944.

Re: Bell housings bolt pattern
Do yourself a favor and get the Fidanza lightweight flywheel (12.5lbs) for an LS1-168 tooth. What is nice about the truck motor is the truck starter new ran like $80 shipped. The LS1 intake fits it with billet fuel rails. It is all documented in my swap "Nailed It". I am slowly building another HCR 5.3l by simply installing 4.8L flat top pistons in it and will stick on Z06 heads....CHEAP power.
Also I have pounded the snot out of the Dodge truck clutch disc CP-4018 ($40) and have not burned it up or broke it. It has more clutch rivets than the Camaro/Vette clutch disc and DOES NOT have to be modified or ground down at the back.

Re: Bell housings bolt pattern
I was thinking that an aluminum flywheel would help compensate for some of the cast iron block. Not much but every thing helps.
I have purchased a LS-1 intake and read your thread "Nailed It" so I have my plans for the fuel rails. Also the 5.3L came with a electronic TB and the LS-1 has the cable. I don't know if the 5.3L TB will bolt to LS-1 intake so I may need to look first then ask but I will ask anyway. Is the 5.3L TB larger, flow more than the LS-1 TB? Should I just stick to the LS-1 TB since I know it mates to the LS-1 intake?

Re: Bell housings bolt pattern
The truck TB fits right on the LS1, just bolt it up. Trim the front TB alloy protrusion to get another 3/8" hood clearace as well

Okay. The reason I ask is that the truck TB looked larger for flow and since I have not removed it from the intake I have no idea as to its mountability. I guess I need to begin exploring and see what the parts look like and then look for info on interchangability. Looks can be deceiving. I also have the complete wiring harness/computer so that will be another issue down the road.
What I haven't seen is the MAF sensor that was suppose to be with it. Will I need to get the MAF sensor for this engine or will one from another vehicle interchange?

Re: Bell housings bolt pattern
It all interchanges with the truck stuff. IIRC the 5.3L TB is the same as the LS1 TB (75 or 78mm). Get a cable TB if you can. The truck brains/harnesses are cheap, just don't send them out to Greg LOL
